Project Anchor

Project Anchor marked a significant transformation at Chessington World of Adventures, breathing new life into the ageing Pirates Cove area. The ambitious redevelopment reimagined the once underutilised corner of the park, delivering a refreshed coastal theme under the name Shipwreck Coast. With a focus on increased guest interaction and immersive storytelling, the area was carefully crafted to blend family-friendly thrills with a maritime twist.

Central to the transformation were two brand-new attractions from ride manufacturer Zamperla. Barrel Bail Out, a soaking water-based ride, took the place of the former Goal Striker pay-to-play football game. Just across from it, Trawler Trouble, a Rockin’ Tug ride, was relocated to replace a basketball game stand. These new additions not only offered fresh experiences but also made better use of the previously underused space.

Complementing the new attractions, two existing rides—Blue Barnacle and Seastorm—received extensive refurbishments. Both rides were reworked and rethemed to better integrate with the new seaside village aesthetic. The retheming unified the land, delivering a coherent visual and thematic identity that enhances the storytelling throughout the area.

Shipwreck Coast wasn’t just about rides, either. The project also saw the introduction of two new animal enclosures featuring Black Rats and Bagot Goats, adding educational and interactive elements to the land. This inclusion reflects Chessington’s ongoing commitment to blending theme park thrills with animal experiences.

Project Anchor officially set sail on July 15th, 2022, and was met with enthusiasm from guests. The refreshed area has since become a standout family zone within the park. With its thoughtful design, fun attractions, and lively coastal atmosphere, Shipwreck Coast represents a successful revitalisation effort—one that honours the past while steering toward a bold and exciting future.

Updates

The Storm Returns

29th April 2022

It’s time for another update, and this time, exciting things are happening!

Over on Seastorm, the long-awaited parts have arrived. This has allowed park engineers to continue putting the ride back together. It’ll be great to have Seastorm back in operation. It remains uncertain whether it will reopen when ready or if it will be held back until Shipwreck Coast is completed.

The foundations for Barrel Bail Out look to be complete, with work progressing on the foundations for the queue line. The ride operator kiosk is yet to have foundations, too, so those will likely begin soon. We haven’t confirmed the arrival of the ride hardware yet, but we’ll monitor it closely!

Fencing and work surrounding Trawler Trouble are also going well. With the exit path and fencing starting to take shape. A scenic refurbishment company is currently overhauling the ride before it reaches Chessington World of Adventures.

Things are progressing well, and we cannot wait to see it all come together.

One Last Pour

21st April 2022

The final concrete framework for the Barrel Bail Out’s trough is in place, with concrete poured and setting. Work also continues on Trawler Trouble, with the perimeter of the ride taking shape. Seastorm’s new queue looks to be complete, but there are still large boulders and planting blocking parts of its layout.

A Trough Appears

14th April 2022

Work continues at Chessington World of Adventures. Most of the concrete base for Barrel Bail Out is now in place, bringing it close to completing its foundations. Rebar sidings are in place for the edge of what will become the base of the water mania ride. Water is expected to fill the base.

The construction team has completed the foundations for Trawler Trouble, and they are currently installing fencing around the site. The base for what will be the loading platform on the left-hand side looks to have its foundations completed.

Not much else seems to be taking place on Seastorm. The park still seems to be awaiting parts to repair the ride. Here’s hoping it will arrive soon so that the park can get Seastorm back into operation. Completing Shipwreck Coast this summer will certainly assist the park in managing the crowds.

Work Speeds Up

9th April 2022

Time flies at Chessington World of Adventures, and apparently, so do the construction crews! Work has picked up, and the foundations for Barrel Bail Out are taking shape. The construction team began building concrete troughs alongside the wooden framework for the rides. This framework will form a mould when the construction team pour the concrete base.

The foundations and what looks to be utilities are in place for Trawler Trouble. The team has completed the trimming and widening of a section of the pathway.

Unfortunately, Seastorm remains in a state of disrepair, with minimal advancements. Nevertheless, the queue line for the ride has undergone a complete overhaul. With a new entranceway taking shape within Shipwreck Coast. The queue will now form part of the area, rather than being a part of Adventure Point. It’s a good change that will help bring the new land together.

Concrete Forms Hard

4th April 2022

Chessington World of Adventures hasn’t made any significant changes, but they’re still working diligently to keep up the momentum. The queue line for Seatorm is taking shape, and the foundation works on Trawler Trouble and Barrel Bail Out continue. They have also dismantled the previous pay-to-play Pirate Blasta game.

No major changes appear to be happening at Seastorm, with the ride still in pieces, likely awaiting the required parts to continue.

26th March 2022

Work continues to progress well, with the new queue line fencing for Seastorm now in place. Seatorm’s entrance is now clearly integrated into the new area. The foundation for Trawler Trouble is now in place. Barrel Bail Out also seems to be beginning to take shape, with the outline of the ride becoming clear.

It’s Officially On

17th March 2022

Themed site walls are up, and work continues clearing the area. Chessington is quickly preparing things without wasting any time. With the boundary now in place, work on clearing away parts of the area. HB Leisure has relocated the former basketball game. Work should start ramping up soon!

Works Subtly Begin

5th March 2022

Once again, little has changed on the site. Some clearing and path widening have begun to take place in the nearby area, but little else has happened.

The park has confirmed to us that they have ordered parts to repair Seastorm, which remains in pieces. The ride is expected to experience delays in reopening due to the current shortage of parts.

It’s All Too Quiet

26th February 2022

Although little has changed, with planning submitted, some small things have begun in the area. The park has closed down the previous basketball game and removed all the prizes. With the nearby pathways cleared and tidied.

Seastorm has not shown any visible progress, revealing the poor state of repair in which the centrepiece of the ride currently exists. The Pirates’ Cove mast, installed in late 2021, remains in place.

This project could be the start of a sweeping change for the area, with two planned new rides and an expected reworking of others. Watch this space for more updates soon.

A Plan Comes To Light

16th February 2022

In early 2022, the Chessington Buzz team got word that changes were coming to Pirate’s Cove this season. To ensure we could document the area, we began photographing the land shortly after Chessington submitted the planning application.

Here you can see Seastorm blocked off following prolonged downtime. The maintenance team has dismantled the ride and is currently awaiting parts. The park is hopeful to have the ride back in operation as soon as possible.

Our journey into what later became Project Anchor and Shipwreck Coast began here.
